Our Beliefs

New Highland Baptist Church believes we are called to glorify God through public worship, biblical preaching, Christian living, personal evangelism, missionary endeavors, and Christian education.

We accept the Scriptures as our only authority in matters of faith and practice. Our interpretation of the Bible leads us to believe the following key tenets:

  • The scriptures of the Old and New Testament as being verbally inspired by God and inerrant and infallible in the original writings, and that they are of supreme and final authority.
  • In one God eternally existing in one essence, yet co-equal persons, the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • That Jesus Christ was begotten by God, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to the virgin Mary.
  • In the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. He is the life of the believer and He empowers the preaching and teaching of the Gospel.
  • That mankind was created in the image of God, sinned, and thereby incurred not only physical death, but spiritual death, which is separation from God, and that human beings are born with a sinful nature.
  • That the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the basis of His shed blood.
  • In the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, His ascension into heaven and His present life there as High Priest and Advocate for us.
  • In the blessed hope, which is the personal, visible and imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
  • That all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again by the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God and heirs of eternal life.
  • In the existence of a personal devil, who is still working in the world to destroy the souls of men and that he and all his angels and all who do not receive Christ as their personal Savior will eternally perish in the lake of fire.
  • In the Church, whose mission it is to preach the Scriptures to all the world, all of its endeavors being guided by multiple leadership and supported by the wise stewardship of God’s people.
  • That the ordinances of the Church, given by the Lord, are Baptism and the Lord’s Table (Communion).

Our History

New Highland carries a rich history of beginning new initiatives, breaking new ground, and making a difference. The very beginning of our church dates to a Baptist Mission begun by the pastor and people of Leigh Street Baptist Church in 1944.

A fledgling Sunday School, and five-room bungalow purchase were humble and faith-filled beginnings. In 1945, those pioneers formed East Highland Park Baptist Church meeting at 1309 Byron Street. In under 2 years, construction began on a new Sunday School and church building in the 1700 block of Byron Street. Further growth, construction, and site development continued as the ministry grew until the early 90’s.

After a period of intense study, prayer, and research, the decision was made to relocate the church to Hanover County. In 1998, a purchase of 10 acres at the corner of New Ashcake Road and Wychwood Drive was made. The congregation voted to change its name to New Highland Baptist Church. Temporary services were held at Pearson’s Corner Elementary School until the completion of the present facility in September of 2000. A few years later, a successful tuition-based, faith-based Dayschool was birthed. In addition, a new classroom wing, and a Christian Life Center was constructed to house recreational and educational ministry in addition to providing overflow space for future growth.

Our Future

We rejoice in the past, are excited about the present, and look forward to the future. The Future Church Team has recently completed its 2023-2025 strategic plan. We are excited to begin inviting, empowering, equipping, and mobilizing our church to further build the kingdom of God here in Mechanicsville, Virginia, and across the world. The question really is, “is God calling you to be part of our future?”
